⚡ El Poder del Presente ⚡
Master the Foundation of Spanish Communication
Why This Power Matters
The Presente Simple is the most used tense in Spanish. It's your foundation for everyday communication, describing routines, expressing general truths, and talking about what's happening right now. Without mastering this tense, you cannot progress to more advanced Spanish magic!
Spanish verbs are divided into three families (las tres conjugaciones) based on their infinitive (verb's base form) endings: -AR, -ER, and -IR. Each family follows its own conjugation pattern. Master these three patterns, and you can conjugate thousands of regular verbs!
Take the infinitive verb → Remove the ending (-ar, -er, or -ir) to find the STEM → Add the appropriate ENDING for each subject pronoun
| Pronombre | BAILAR (to dance) | COMER (to eat) | VIVIR (to live) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yo | bailo | como | vivo |
| Tú | bailas | comes | vives |
| Él / Ella / Usted | baila | come | vive |
| Nosotros/as | bailamos | comemos | vivimos |
| Vosotros/as | bailáis | coméis | vivís |
| Ellos / Ellas / Ustedes | bailan | comen | viven |
Not all verbs follow the regular patterns. Some of the most common and important verbs in Spanish are irregular. But don't worry, irregulars follow predictable patterns too! Let's break them down by type:
These verbs are so commonly used that they follow their own unique patterns. You must memorise these!
SER (to be - permanent)
ESTAR (to be - temporary/location)
IR (to go)
These verbs are only irregular in the YO form. All other forms follow regular patterns!
HACER (to do/make)
PONER (to put)
SALIR (to leave/go out)
TRAER (to bring)
VER (to see/watch)
SABER (to know)
The vowel in the stem changes in all forms EXCEPT nosotros and vosotros (it looks like a boot on a conjugation chart, hence the nickname!). The endings remain regular.
E → IE (like QUERER - to want)
O → UE (like PODER - to be able to)
E → I (like PEDIR - to ask for)
When to Wield This Power
Tip: How to Type Accents in Spanish:

Mac: Hold the vowel → choose the accented option.
Chromebook: Press
Ctrl + '(apostrophe) then the vowel. On phones/tablets: Hold the letter until options appear.
